Lionel Messi an Argentina and Barcelona superstar, has been widely considered to be one of the greatest football players, due to his exceptional career winning a lot of professional honors, most especially he won a record sixth balon d’or last December.

The Barcelona forward made history back in 2012, when he scored a total of 91 goals in 69 official games in the calendar year beating the previous record set by Bayern Munich legend, Gerd Muller, a record of 85 goals in a calendar year back in 1972.

Gerd Muller’s 40-year-old record was shattered by Leo. After breaking the record, Messi gifted Gerd Muller a signed shirt that read, “For Gerd Muller/My respect and admiration/A hug, Leo”.

The shirt was accompanied by a letter written by then Barcelona president, Sandro Rosell, who was the president for five years 2010-2014, to Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, which was titled, “Recognition of the player and person that is Gerd Muller”.

The letter read, “ The esteem and admiration our club feels for Bayern and it’s fans is demonstrated once again in the historical tie between these two great players who have become sporting legends of our club”. Sandro Rosell.

The shirt should have been one of Muller’s prized possessions, but he decided to send the shirt to his former club, so it can be displayed in the Allianz Arena.

The shirt remains to this day the one and only non-related Bayern material in the entire stadium.
