Departments in OAU with the most popular Alumni

Obafemi Awolowo University popularly called Great Ife!!!, is not only great because its Africa’s most beautiful campus, but also because of its top class graduates the school can boast of nationwide. Amongst all these top graduates we have, Femi Otedola (a Nigerian Billionaire), Femi Falana (SAN), Lai Mohammed (Minister of Information), Lagbaja (a legendary Nigerian artiste), Abike Dabiri (a Nigerian politician), Dele Momodu (a Nigerian Journalist), Idowu Bamitale Omole ( a former OAU VC), Olajumoke Adenowo (a Nigerian architect) and many others.

1. LAW
OAU law is known for it academic intellects. Ifelaw as they are referred to have produce many notable personality in the society either practicing lawyers or non practicing they are all well known.
Some of the practicing lawyers which Ifelaw is always proud of are Femi Falana( SAN) who is a Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist. From 1977 till 1981 he studied at the Obafemi Awolowo University. He began his legal practice in 1982. After finishing his law practice in 2012, Femi Falana became a Senior Advocate in Nigeria.

Also, Jimoh Ibrahim who also studied law at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Laws (LLB). And the likes of Oluwagbemiga “Gbenga” Oyebode MFR, Tade Ipadeola, Helen Prest-Ajayi, Fatou Bom Bensouda ( a Gambia lawyer), Gbenga Oyebode, Yusuf Olaolu Ali and host of others who graduated from Great Ife and are still practicing.

Ifelaw have also not only produced competent lawyers but also discovered talents in their students which are also popular and proud graduates of Ifelaw in likes of Oladipo Olamide Emmanuel professionally known as Chinko Ekun, is a Nigerian rapper and songwriter, WoleOguntokun is a Nigerian playwright, stage and film director, Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, or Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is a Nigerian politician and lawyer who is also the Governor of Ondo State.

Ifelaw has the credit for producing highly successful personalities in the society.

2. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
The Department of International Relations which is under the Faculty of Administration is notable for producing diplomats, delegates and rising stars. Some of the notable alumni are:

John Olukayode Fayemi who was born 9th of February 1965 and had bagged a degree from Obafemi Awolowo University. He had later become the Governor of Ekiti State being a native of the state itself after resigning as The Minister of Solid Mineral Developments in the year 2018 to pursue his dream of being a governor after.

Olusegun Adeniyi, a renowned Journalist who is the head of the editorial board of Thisday newspaper was born 6th of November, 1965 in Ile-Ife. He wasn’t a journalist alone but also a spokesperson for the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua a product of this very department.

Aderounmu Adejumoke, a popular movie actress who had stared as ‘Jummy’ in Alakada part 2 and also played roles in the Nigerian TV series ‘Jenifa’s diary’. She had graduated from the prestigious OAU with a degree in International Relations before pursuing further goals at La Cinefabrique multimedia Cine in France.

Olagunsoye Oyinlola also graduated with a diploma in International relations from this department and many others.

3. POLITICAL SCIENCE
The department of political science was fully established as a course of study in the 1967/1968 session and as since then produced graduates in high positions of Nigeria today.

Kayode Fayemi is a notable figure from the department of Political Science, OAU. He has been the governor of Ekiti state twice now, his first tenure from 2010-2014, and he’s currently the governor of Ekiti state since 2018 till date. He was also the Minister of Solid Minerals Development before he contested for the governorship post the second time.

Amal Pepple graduated with a first class honor in Political Science, OAU. In 2008, she became the head of civil service of the federation. She also held high positions in various ministries before becoming the Minister of housing, land and Urban development in President Goodluck Jonathan’s regime.

4. DRAMATIC AND THEATER ARTS
Obafemi Awolowo University’s Department of Dramatic Arts is a place fit only for the tough where rigorous training goes on. Though students from other departments frown upon their overly hectic activities nevertheless these training have produced quite great results. Lots of graduates from the department are making huge successes of themselves. Among them are:

Kola Oyewo: A former member of Awo Varsity Theater. A one time senior lecturer in OAU. He also lectured in Redeemers university and helped in establishing Ekiti State University’s Theater Arts Department where he is an associate professor. He starred in the movies such as Sango and Saworoide.

Bukunmi Oluwasina: She produced the hit movie(that made her popular) Ayomi, while she was in her final year in OAU. She is a script writer and an actress. She is also a musician and makes soundtracks for all her movies and lots of Yoruba movies.
Biyi Bandele: Is a Nigerian novelist, playwright and actor. He is based in the UK, writes fictions and he’s also a journalist.

5. ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
The electrical and electronic department popularly known as Elect Elect, is a department to have produced so many influential engineers within and outside Nigeria.

Late Engr. Babalola Borishade graduated with first class honors in Electrical engineering, Obafemi Awolowo University, he was not only an engineer but also a politician, he was a federal minister in Nigeria four times. He also had so many achievements in his career before he died, 26 April, 2017.

Engr. Akintunde Akinwande is a graduate with B.sc and M.sc from Elect Elect in OAU and is currently an electrical engineering professor in Massachusetts institute of technology.

Seun Osewa, the founder of Nairaland is also from this prestigious department.

Engr. Ernest Ndukwe, former chief executive officer of NCC (Nigerian Communications Commission) also obtained his first degree in Electronic and Electrical engineering from OAU.
