ALBUM REVIEW: MADE IN LAGOS — WIZKID

Made in Lagos
Made in Lagos – Wizkid

First tweeted to be ready late 2018, and after series of postponements and cruises, the most anticipated album of the decade so far got released 30:10:20 with 14 tracks although two (Smile ft H.E.R and No Stress) had earlier been released as the lead singles.

Reactions trailed off the release of the album despite the earlier leak of many of the songs. Many feel its worth the hype based on the level of creativity he put in the project while some who felt since he hasnt been dishing indigenous sounds for sometime due to his overseas affliated deals, MIL would have been a platform to release them steadily as he used to but the expectations were cut short as virtually all the songs are of foreign sounds. Some merely criticized the album due to dislike for the artiste and some due to personal reasons.

The album’s duration is 51minutes and featured eight artistes; African Giant Burna boy, BBK Skepta, fellow labelmate Terri, Ella Mai, H.E.R, Tay Iwar, Projexx and Damien Marley.

GINGER (Ft. Burna Boy): Undoubtedly our 2nd best collaboration off the piece. Credit goes to Burna Boy for the masterclass display of versatility in hooking the right chorus and Wizkid blending the right flow to the magic created by them both.

RECKLESS: Intro sounded weird but the body of this song no doubt hits on a different level. Wiz must have taken his time to deliver the right tempo to the right track. Its no doubt our best single off the album.

SMILE (Ft. H.E.R): Kudos to Wiz for this track back in July. The consistent rhythm and matching lyrics on this song is world class. H.E.R with the amazing vocals also delivered a fine and sonorous tune to hook with the flow. No doubt our best collaboration off the album.

MIGHTY WINE: another similar afrobeat sound. This jam is surely going to make you dance , and if you’re the type that’s bad at dancing, trust me you’ll shake

ROMA (Ft. Terri): sounded more like an afrobeat. The rhymes of its lyrics is on another level . You’ll find yourself shaking your head in no time whilst listening to it.

TRUE LOVE (Ft. Tay Iwar and Projexx):True love : the intro sounded like 90s blues. The background trumpet sounds made the jam hit differently.
BLESSED (Ft. Damien Marley): One can’t overestimate the great sounds of the popular Jamaican singer, Damian Marley. But with its synchronization with Wizkid’s, it was like hearing vocals from above. Everything was well synced, their sounds, tune and even the beat.

GYRATE: this is just another great body of work. Wizkid’s dedication to making great sounds can’t be overemphasized in this jam.

NO STRESS: originally released as a single last month. Starboy was amazing on this body of work. It’s not just melodious but content full.

ESSENCE (Ft. Tems): featuring Tems who also released an album this year . The duo was excellent on this track . The Try Me Crooner didn’t do below standards on this track. Her rise and fall pitch was just everything Wizkid needed on this “Essence” track and with Eleniyan, the king of sounds, he was able to flow with tempo and it was magic!

SWEET ONE: Baba nla sounded just like the Baba he is in this track . The sync between his Yoruba indigenous language and English lyrics was lit in this jam

PIECE OF ME (Ft. Ella Mai): Wizkid and Ella Mai gave it all in this track. The sounds, rhymes and the harmony between their voices can’t be underrated.

LONG TIME (Ft. Skepta): featuring rapper skepta, longtime can’t be overlooked when talking of good tracks in the album . The balance between skepta’s rap and wizzy’s verse is masterclass.

GRACE: another one ( in DJ khaleed’s voice). Yeah, the slow beats and wizzy’s voice made an amazing harmony of sound.

The shortest track off the album is ROMA featuring wonder kid Terri with 2minutes 59 seconds while the longest track is BLESSED featuring the legendary Damien Marley with 4 minutes 22 seconds.

Despite Wizkid tagging the album’s genre Afrobeats, most of the songs off it undoubtedly are Rnb and Soul.

In comparison to his previous albums and EP, the efforts put into MIL could still not match the sounds that came from his debut album ‘Superstar‘ where his versatility and intent on spreading different sounds was key. Ayo also featured different genres and messages which in it is his best indigenous track, Ojuelegba. SFTOS also witnessed different sounds including his Best foreign track of all time, Come Closer featuring Drake. Made In Lagos purely is about love and this is unusual of the Legendary Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun but possible projects after MIL would no doubt leave a smack of satisfaction on the lips of his ‘indigenous sounds’ lovers.

Nevertheless, MADE IN LAGOS is still a huge project which has won the hearts of many and attracted him to many but as per the main matter, Wizkid needs to serve his people what they want— his indigenous sounds to get more of the deserved rating he gets on a norms.

Rating the album might seem too early although with the great content and a lot of streams it has garnered but nearly same (only) genre put into it, the album can be rated as near to perfect. On a scale of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Above Average, Average, Below Average, Fair… Poor, the album is undoubtedly on a VERY GOOD scale.
