Citation is a Netflix production released 6 days ago and it’s already arguably the best nollywood movie of the year.

So much has happened in the Nollywood world right from the advent of the pandemic where movie directors and producers have to improvise in the making of their movies but not so much great movies have been produced with the exception of Citation and some few others.
Coming from one of the biggest and greatest producer in the Nollywood scene, Kunle Afolayan. Citation is a movie released on the 6th of November and due to stringent rules on cinemas, Netflix happens to be the media service that begets it.

Moremi a postgraduate student studying for her masters in International relations at Obafemi Awolowo University was sexually molested by her lecturer, Prof. Lucien N’Dyare.

Moremi’s first personal communication with Prof. Lucien N’Dyare was at the front of the University’s Faculty of Administration, directly at the Professor’s car pack where Lucien claimed he didn’t know how to drive “stick”.
Miss Moremi got to know at the climax of the movie that Prof. Lucien N’Dyare’s old car was actually a manual gear car that he loved to drive.

Much of the ensuing drama unfolds as an unnerving tribunal, as university authorities listen to testimony from Moremi, N’Dyare, and other witnesses and advocates.

The movie centers on the theme of rape, love, traditional African society and belief, betrayal, adventure, etc and is an eye-opener and a unique African perspective to the student-lecturer rape perspective. It plays around the college life of Moremi who accuses professor Lucien N’Dyare of sexual assault. Her stories of assault were not really taken serious at the beginning due to the status of the accused as well as his denial. However, as time goes on, they began to take her allegations seriously and justice is served.

One can not help but also talk about the gracious acts of these cast right from the Protagonist Temi Otedola who played Moremi and the Antagonist, Jimmy Jean-Louis who starred as Lucien D’Nyare, a professor.

Despite being the antagonist, one can see the vigour of acting in Jimmy Jean-Louis. His ability to keep a straight face when he had to, to smile and show compassion where it was needed. He played his role flawlessly and effortlessly as if he was a born antagonist. He was that good.
And for Temi Otedola, one can barely believe Citation is her first movie outing. Her composure throughout that movie was dauntless and perfect. Not many can give a gracious acts at their first as she did.

Asides the aforementioned reasons, the setting of the movie has a major role on the greatness of the movie. OAU being one among few best universities in Nigeria gave the screenplay a good scenery with a classic but great sense of touch.

The languages used in the movie gave it a multi-faceted outlook of being international. Atleast four languages were spoken in the movie namely; English, Wolof, French, Yoruba.

This movie is arguably the best nollywood movie in 2020 and a must watch for everyone.
