Faculties and Departments in OAU

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ifé, Osun State is one of the three Universities in Nigeria, established between 1961 & 1962. The University started with five Faculties – Agriculture, Arts, Economics and Social studies (now Social Sciences), Law and Science. Six new Faculties have since been added, namely the Faculty of Education (established on 1st October, 1967), the Faculty of Pharmacy (established on 1st October, 1969), the Faculties of Technology and Health Sciences (now College of Health Sciences) (both established on 1st October, 1960), Faculty of Administration with effect from 1st October 1979) and Faculty of Environmental Design and Management (established on April 6, 1982).

In 1992, the University established a collegiate system with five Colleges. The system did not function effectively and was abandoned after two years. However, the Postgraduate College and the College of Health Sciences were retained. The College of Health Sciences now comprises of the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences and Dentistry.

Faculty of Administration:

The Faculty of Administration, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria is one of the oldest in the citadel of learning and has, therefore, successfully produced a good number of graduates at the Undergrad and postgraduate levels. Most of the alumni of the Faculty are among the current and retired top administrative officials in the private and public sectors, captains of government and non-governmental industries as well as exemplars who have made deep-rooted marks in their various endeavours.

The Faculty hosts four important departments, namely:

•Management & Accounting
•Public Administration
• International Relations and
• Local Government & Development Studies.

Faculty of Agriculture

The Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria is one of the five foundation Faculties with which the University started functioning in 1962. In 1966/67, the Faculty was one of the first units of the University to move to the permanent site at Ile-Ife and it is now one of the 13 Faculties in the University.

The following departments presently constitute the Faculty.

Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, Nigeria has eight academic Departments and the Institute of Cultural Studies. The Faculty of Arts is one of the largest in the University. Each of the eight Departments under it runs B.A. degree programmes, Single and Combined Honours alike.
The faculty houses eight degree programmes. It runs both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in these programmes.

The faculty consists of the following Departments and Institute:

• Religious Studies
• Philosophy
• English
• History
• Foreign Languages
• Linguistics and African Languages
• Dramatic Arts
• Music
• Institute of Cultural Studies

The Department of Foreign Languages runs three B.A programmes (one each for French, German and Portuguese), the Department of Linguistics and African Languages runs two B.A. Programmes (Yoruba, and Linguistics), while the other departments run one B.A. Programme each. Many Departments, including Linguistics and African Languages, Dramatic Arts, Foreign Languages, and Music run sub-degree certificate and diploma programmes. All the Departments have viable postgraduate programmes.

Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences

The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is one of the three faculties constituting the present College of Health Sciences of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

The faculty houses nine degree programmes. It runs both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in these programmes.

The faculty consists of the following Departments:

• Anatomy and Cell Biology
• Medical Biochemistry
• Physiological Sciences
• Medical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
• Chemical Pathology
• Haematology and Immunology
• Medical Microbiology and Parasitology

Faculty of Clinical Sciences

The Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, Nigeria is about 30 years old. It is one of the three Faculties in the College of Health sciences.

The Faculty consists of 11 clinical departments

Faculty of Dentistry

The Faculty of Dentistry, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, Nigeria was formally instituted in the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in September 1975 after years of careful planning.

The following departments presently constitute the Faculty.

• Child Dental Health
• Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral

• Preventive and Community Dentistry
• Restorative Dentistry

Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, Nigeria offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The initial undergraduate degree structure in the University was an adaptation of the Ashby Commission recommendations on the training of secondary school level teachers for Nigeria. Thus, the undergraduate courses in Education are combined with the subjects taught in secondary schools which are: Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Integrated/Mathematics), Social Sciences (Economics, Geography, Political Science, Social Studies) and Arts(English Language, Yoruba, Music, Fine and Applied Arts, History, Religious Studies and French) The Faculty also has undergraduate courses in Adult Education, Guidance and Counselling, Educational Management and Physical and Health Education. At the postgraduate level there are courses in the educational foundation programmes, all leading to PGDE, M.Ed. M.A.Ed. M.Phil. and Ph.D.

Furthermore, the Faculty provides for professional development of in-service teachers by running part-time degree programmes in all the courses that exist at the undergraduate level.

Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo is affiliated to the Faculty and the Faculty is also open to more affiliations with other colleges in order to extend service delivery and leadership to wide areas in the nation. In all, the Faculty is positioned to continue to be relevant in producing manpower for the education industry as well as in extending frontiers of knowledge and services in the teaching profession and other relevant endeavours.

Faculty of Environmental Design and Management

In Faculty of Environmental Design and Management (EDM), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, the general rationale for environmental design and management approach emanates from different activities of human beings such as physical, economic and social activities required for the provision of economical, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing environment. This involves design, estimation, construction, control, monitoring, valuation, decoration and maintenance of infrastructural and accommodation developments.

The faculty houses six degree programmes. It runs both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in these programmes.

The faculty consists of the following Departments:

• Fine and Applied Arts
• Architecture
• Building
• Estate Management
• Quantity Surveying
• Urban and Regional Planning

Faculty of Technology

The Faculty of Technology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria was the first Faculty of Engineering to be christened as a Faculty of Technology in Nigeria. The foundation Departments were: Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and Food Science and Technology.

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria is the largest in the University, with academic staff strength comprising of 49 Professors, 14 Readers, 34 Senior Lecturers and 81 other academic staff. In addition to various breakthroughs in research which are being compiled, the Faculty has produced three National Merit Award winners. Various Professors from the faculty, too numerous to mention have served the nation in various capacities.

The faculty houses eight degree programmes. It runs both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in these programmes.

The faculty consists of the following Departments:

Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria is a fascinating centre of excellence where your lofty aspirations and yearnings for legal knowledge are catered for.

The Faculty of Law is one of the Foundation Faculties of this University since 1962.

The following departments presently constitute the Faculty.

• International Law
• Jurisprudence and Private Law
• Public Law

Faculty of Pharmacy

The Faculty of Pharmacy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria was first established as a Department in the former Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Ibadan Branch, in the year 1957. When the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) was established in 1962, it remained a Department within the Faculty of Science. It, however, continued to award the Diploma in Pharmacy degree till June 1965 while concurrently starting a programme for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) degree in September 1963.

There are currently in the Faculty the following five academic departments and one units:

• Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Administration
• Pharmaceutical Chemistry
• Pharmaceutics
• Pharmacognosy
• Pharmacology
• Drug Research and Production Unit

In all, the Obafemi Awolowo University has a number of 2 Colleges, 13 Faculties, 92 Departments, 19 Research Centres and a student population which has risen steadily from 244 in 1962/63 to over 30,000 at present.
