Studying abroad is a dream for many Nigerian students. However, the cost of living, tuition, accommodation and airfare, among others, make that dream seem less and less of a reality. Thankfully, there are scholarships that cover most, if not all, of those expenses (some more than others). The dream is still alive! Some are highly competitive because of the prestige and generous offers covered by the program. Here are the five most applied international scholarships you should look out for:

1. Fulbright Scholarship (USA):

Ever wanted to study in the US? Then this opportunity has your name written all over it. Fulbright scholarships benefit over 4000 students from over 155 countries (Nigeria included) per year. The award covers tuition fees, airfare, health insurance, stipend and textbooks.

2. Chevening Scholarships (UK):
This scholarship program benefits Masters students who have displayed not just academic excellence, but also leadership potential. It aims at building the future global leaders and has been in place since 1983. The program covers tuition fees, airfare, arrival allowance, monthly allowance, the cost of one visa application and others.

3. Gates Cambridge Scholarships (UK):
Established by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, the program has since then awarded more than 1800 graduate students the scholarship to study in the University of Cambridge. Allowance, tuition, economy class ticket airfare at the beginning and end of the program are all guaranteed.

4. Commonwealth scholarships (UK):
Every year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) awards around 800 postgraduate students from developing Commonwealth countries with scholarships to study in the UK. The program covers tuition and examination fees, airfare to and from the UK at the end of your award, thesis grant, research grant (for PhD students), warm clothing allowance and stipend.

5. The Schwarzman Scholars Program:
More than 200 postgraduate students benefit for the Schwarzman Scholarship every year. To qualify, applying students must have shown exemplary academic, leadership and entrepreneurial capabilities. The program aims to groom the next generation of world leaders. Expenses are fully covered by the program including tuition, travel fare to and from Beijing, textbooks and other school supplies needed, and in-country study tour, health insurance, personal stipend, a Lenovo smartphone and laptop.
