Disclaimer: As one that has stayed in Moz, this piece is based on my opinion and that of friends.
Moz as its popularly called is one of the female hostels on O.A.U campus. It’s demarcation from Angola(a male hostel) is a car park that is named by all and sundry as AngloMoz. Moz is located almost away from civilization as its distance to academic area and religion ground is far.
There are certain things that happen in Mozambique but rarely or never happen in other female hostels. Some of these are
1. Fetching water from the water tank with a bowl or fetcher
There are times when the well would be dried and water tanks will be locked but contains water in it.On such occasions, Moz queens display their survival skills as they climb the tank to hustle for water.
2. Bathing outside( in front of the room):
The way the buildings are structured in a bungalow format makes it more convenient. Most Moz queens find the bathrooms ( especially the ones not tiled) disgusting and prefer to have their bath out.
3. Keeping watch when using electric iron or blender
If you are caught, it will be seized and you would have to go through series of begging before you get it back.
4. Facing stress at the potters lodge if you forgot your ID card or it was misplaced.
5. Being sent back to the car park to wear your ID Card if you are caught wearing it at the front the potters
6. Accomodating tenants that won’t pay rent but would live and eat with you
I’m referring to those annoying rats, they will eat your food stuff, disturb your sleep and peace of mind.
7. AngloMoz/ Moz 101
Just arrive at that location at night and you will see how the queens are being rushed like hot cakes
8. Large number of people in the common room when there is interruption of power supply.
9. The presence of snakes
Snakes are found almost every week in Mozambique hall.
10. The experience of Aro from Awo residents.
Anyone who can survive Moz can survive anywhere cause Moz queens are fighters. Feel free to share your opinion and any contrasting view.
