There wouldn’t be a complete list without our all time favorite Shakespearean. Williams Shakespeare created a world of violence and generational conflict where two young people fall in love and died because of their love. In this story, there was a death filled world, a love story that led to the lover’s union in death. It is known as a tragic love story.

2. JANE AUSTEN’S PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

The book began with the search for a wife. It’s a romance novel that stars the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth Bennet as they play out their spirited courtship in a series set in the eighteenth century. It is a witty comedy of manners.

3. EMILY BRONTE’S WUTHERING HEIGHTS

Wuthering heights is an erotic, wild and passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. Heathcliff was bullied and maltreated, he left thinking his love wasn’t reciprocated. He came back as a rich man and was out for revenge against his ex-mistress.

4. MARGERARET MITCHELL’S GONE WITH THE WIND

This renowned epic novel tells us about love and war. It won the Nobel Pulitzer price and was one of the popular and most celebrated movies of all time. It is one of the many books written about the civil war and its aftermath. The two main characters are the white shouldered, irresistible Scarlett and the flashy, contemptuous Rhett. Margaret Mitchell conveyed a timeless love in between one of the harshest circumstance.

5. D.H. LAWRENCE’S WOMEN IN LOVE

The novel tells the story of two sisters in love, Ursula and Gurdun. It was set in a town at Midland Colliery, years before the world war. Ursula falls in love with Birkin and Gudrun has an intense but tragic affair with the Gerald, the son of a local colliery owner.

6. DAPHNE DU MAURIER’S REBECCA

The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where the heroine is swept off our feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Been an orphaned and a maid, she couldn’t believe her luck. Upon getting to the mansion, their marriage was threatened by the lingering feelings of the late wife.

7. COLLEN McCullough’s THE THORN BIRDS

The thorn bird is an epic saga of a family rooted in the Australian sheep country. It tells the love of Meggie Cleary, who can never possess the man she desperately adores, and the Ralph de Bricassart, who is on love with Meggie despite been a parish priest. This novel speaks more of an impossible love.

8. CHARLES DICKENS’S A TALE OF TWO CITIES

It tells the story of a political prisoner in the Bastille, after been imprisoned for eighteen years, the aging Doctor Manette is finally reunited with his daughter in England. The lives of two different personalities. Charles Darney; An exiled French aristocrat and Sydney Carton; A disreputable but brilliant English Lawyer. Both men love toward Lucie Manette, their vengeful and bloodstained journey.

9. VICTOR HUGO’S THE HUNCHBACK OF NORTE DAME


Victor Hugo’s sensational, evocative novel brings life into medieval Paris. Love was described in such a detailed manner earning its place among one of the best historical romances of the nineteenth century. It tells a story of a despised hunchbacked pitied only by beautiful Esmeralda, who has also caught the eyes of the sinister archdeacon Claude Frollo

10. SHAKESPEAREN A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

This is another awesome Shakespearean romance. A story portraying the adventure of young lovers and a group of amateur actors, retelling their interactions with woodland fairies and the duke and duchess. It was set in a mythical place at Athens and an enchanted forest.
