The Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC), Muhammad Sanusi died yesterday at about 11 pm. His death was announced to the public by NNPC General Managing Director, Mele Kyari.
This morning, Mr Kyari on his verified Twitter handle, @MKKyari tweeted, “We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11 pm yesterday, July 5 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly.”
Barkindo’s term as OPEC Secretary-General was to end on July 31st, this year.
Before his death, Mr Barkindo, on Tuesday, met President Muhammadu Buhari along with the OPEC delegation in Abuja. The meeting took place to honour Barkindo’s two-term as OPEC Secretary-General. He received accolades and honours from President Muhammad Buhari who had claimed to be proud of Barkindo’s distinguished achievements in OPEC. Buhari described him as a worthy ambassador who has been able to navigate OPEC through turbulent challenges.
The cause of his death is unknown at the time of filing this report.
