The movement was to urge and compel FG to pay immediate attention to ASSU demands to reopen closed federal universities and has lined up its members across the country in each state including the federal capital for the protests.
ASUU had shut down all public universities and commenced its endless strike on February 14, 2022, as the FG failed to meet some of its requests including the release of revitalization budgets for universities, renegotiation of 2009 between FG and ASUU agreement, the release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution UTAS the proposed payment platform for the of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.
The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, had last Wednesday proclaimed the protest illegal, indicating the NLC had no dispute with the federal government.
The following day, Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, similarly urged against the rally, stating he received a security report from the Department of State Services that the rally might be hijacked by hoodlums.
However, security personnel is already placed nationwide at the protest to avoid any attacks by hoodlums.
This protest might be a great step to finally solving the issues between the government and ASUU.
