OAU Plans To Improve On Research, Development

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria has unveiled its plan to reclaim its position of research and development through its newly inaugurated Central Office of Research.

According to a statement made available to journalists on Thursday, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, disclosed this during the inauguration of six committees of the Central Office of Research at the African Centre of Excellence park, OAU, Ile-Ife.

He said, “Our strategy is to drive an all-inclusive working system among all the stakeholders of the university estate. The university system can only grow through the selfless efforts of men and women of like minds, shared drive, and passion for institutional development.

“I appreciate everyone present for either offering to volunteer on a committee or attending the occasion despite the ongoing strike action and I encourage members of the university community to make suggestions on how best to drive the university forward through the COR.

“The six committees inaugurated are: Editorial Board for OAU Research Bulletin led by Prof. Morenike Ukpong, University Academic Research Seminar/Workshop Committee led by Prof. Charles Ukeje, University Template Harmonisation Committee led by Dr. E.T. Ijisakin, University Committee on Capacity Building for Early Career Researchers led by Prof. Joshua Aransiola, Internship and Students Engagement Committee led by Engr. Temitope Ajayi, and Committee on Harnessing Indigenous Resources to Address Infrastructural Challenges in the University led by Prof. A. O. Shittu.”

The Executive Director of the University’s COR, Prof. Akanni Akinyemi, said, “The aim of the university is to promote the currency of Research for Development and the committees inaugurated are to drive the ‘Research for Development’ frontier for the university.

“It is important for everyone present to see themselves as stakeholders who will move the university, nation, and continent forward by improving the university’s research profile.”

The Chairperson of the University’s TETFund office, Prof. O. O. Akinlo praised the Vice-Chancellor and the COR for the initiative to inaugurate Committees that will drive research and development for the university. In her address, she noted that this initiative is a much-needed new approach for the university to reclaim and retain its relevance in the educational sector in Nigeria and globally. Prof. Akinlo stressed that it is important for all categories of members of staff and students to work together if the university will expect to make both local and global impacts through research that leads to tangible development.
